Submission Guidelines

Conditions for Participation
  • Applicants must represent an academic institution or a where they are engaged in a teaching/research/ role.
  • The case must be written on real Family Business organisations based in Asia.
  • The case may be authored by an individual or a team (maximum 4).
  • An author can submit a maximum of two cases, written either individually or jointly.
  • The case and the teaching note must be the original work of the author(s).
  • The author(s) must submit the case abstract not exceeding 250 words, through email by the deadline mentioned below.
  • The abstract must clearly communicate – the organisation, the decision situation and contextual setting in brief.
  • Each case must accompany a ‘Teaching Note,’ failing which the submission would be rejected. (Please refer to the ‘Content and Form’ section for more information on teaching note).
  • In case of acceptance, the author or one of the co-authors should be available to present the paper at the conference.
Content and Form
  • The case must be about a real life decision situation faced by an Asian family business.
  • Size of the business and family will not affect case selection.
  • Provide a lively description of the decision situation and bring case protagonist and other characters come alive in insightful dialogues.
  • Present relevant facts with all details required for a meaningful analysis (include charts/tables/graphs as exhibits).
  • Describe different dimensions of the decision problem and include multiple perspectives to make the case an interesting learning experience.
  • Avoid any signals of a preferred analysis or solution in the case.
  • Write the case in third person, past tense and active voice.
  • Use simple language and keep the use of jargon (if at all required) to a minimum.
  • The full case, including all appendices should NOT exceed 20 pages of text and exhibits while adhering to the formatting style given below.
  • Formatting Style – Font - Times New Roman; font size - 12; line spacing - 1.5 with one-inch margin all around.
  • Provide citations for any information extracted from an external source (Incorporate the references into the body copy of the case, i.e. numbered in the text, with a footnote on the same page or a reference list at the end).
The Teaching Note must include the following:
  • Case Synopsis (keep it brief).
  • Target Audience (Programmes where the case can be taught – e.g. MBA, Exec. MBA)
  • Learning Objectives of the case (list the concepts sought to be taught using the case and courses wherein the case can be used).
  • Teaching Approach/ Session Plan (to help faculty guide the case discussion).
  • Possible questions for class discussion/assignment.
  • Suggested answers to those questions.
  • Suggest additional readings (if any).
Please note that any analyses/answers/solutions presented in the teaching note must only be based on the information provided in the case and NOT on any information that is new/unknown to the case.

1. As an author or co-author, one individual can submit a maximum of 3 papers.
2. Submitted papers must NOT have been previously published and if under review, must NOT appear in print before the Sixth Asian Invitational Conference on Family Business, ISB, Feb. 3, 2017.
3. To facilitate the blind review process, remove ALL authors identifying information, including acknowledgements from the text, and document/file properties. (Any submissions with author information will be automatically DELETED).
4. The entire paper (title page, abstract, main text, figures, tables, references, etc.) must be in ONE document created in PDF format.
5. The maximum length of the paper is 40 pages (size: A4) (including ALL tables, appendices and references). The paper format should follow the European Management Review Style Guide (
6. Use Times New Roman 12-pitch font, double spaced, and 1-inch (2.5 cm) margin all around.
7. Number all of the pages of the paper.
8. No changes in the paper title, abstract, authorship and actual paper can occur AFTER the submission deadline.
9. Check that the PDF File of your paper opens and prints correctly. Also ensure that the file is virus-free.
10. An A4 sized, single page, cover sheet bearing author information must also be submitted as a separate PDF document. The cover sheet must include, Title of the paper, Author Names, Affiliated Institution’s Name, Brief Abstract in 250 words and 6 Keywords.
11. Only submissions made in English and adhering to these guidelines shall be accepted for review.
12. In case of acceptance, the author or one of the co-authors should be available to present the paper at the conference.
